Public Service Announcement: Alcohol Anonymous for Teenagers

Teenage girl testimonial: “I felt so alone, scared, helpless. I didn’t know what to do with myself; so I took another drink. The pressure of school, and the partying scene caught up with me. My parents always expected me to do above average in school and I felt so stressed out. Alcohol wasn’t the answer and it didn’t work for me anymore. Then I attended my first Alcohol Anonymous meeting. I didn’t know what to expect, but these people in here have all felt those feelings before. They gave me help to stop my drinking and hope for my new life. I feel much more comfortable with my life and the people around me.”

Man narrator: “Many alcoholics are starting at a younger age as time goes by. A majority of them are teenagers and even pre-teens. AA helps teenage alcoholics to stop depending on alcohol to answer all of their problems. AA…it works. Look us up in the phone book, or check your local newspaper to find out where an AA meeting sight is located near you. Also, you can visit our website www.aa.com.”

Citing its record fuel costs, Delta air Lines plans to begin charging customers an extra $25 or $50 a round trip for checking a second bag. (Layer two)
The new charge, which takes effect May 1, follows moves by other carriers to add similar fees for transporting a second piece of luggage, which previously has been included in the ticket.

“The change is due to rising fuel cost and…the changing competitive environment we face today,” Delta spokesman Kent Landers said Monday. (Layer four)
United and US Airways announced similar fees last month to take effect in May. United, which is similar in size to Delta, estimated that its fee will generate about $100 million in cost savings per year, according to the Associated Press.
Landers declined to say how much money Delta expects to generate from the new fee. He said the fee will not apply to first class or business class customers or members of its frequent flier program. Those travelers will still be able to check up to three bags without extra fees, said Landers.

Delta disclosed the $25 bag fee last week as part of its efforts to offset mounting fuel bills. Last week, Delta also said it plans to cut about 2,000 jobs and ot ground dozens of jets to reduce its domestic flying by 10 percent.

Who's Spinning the Media Yarn?

In recent news Senator Barack Obama has fallen in some polls due to his comments about Senator Hillary Clinton regarding the “small town bitterness” comment. Obama claims it was a misunderstanding on what he said and caused him to become defensive to a set of primaries that can help him win his set of white voters in bad economic communities. Obama had stated at a small Pennsylvania fund raiser that “cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them” as a way to explain their frustrations,” according to the New York Times.
Obama’s remarks have been replayed in the media so much because it had a major affect on certain citizens who describe themselves as “small town citizens.” Even though Obama had apologized for this remarks and stated he had chosen the wrong words for this context as a person in the media I believe his remarks should be floating around. Public figures all the time have controversial remarks that they have made weather they regret them or not, it still out in the media. I agree with what Sen. Obama had said, his comment had truth in it, however, Sen. Clinton felt offended because of how she was raised; she claims to be a small town woman.
In addition to what the public figure said, their responses, apologizes, or anything else should also be covered just as much as the original remark. Nothing should be hidden from the world that a major political candidate had said, weather it has been bad or good. Former president Bill Clinton had made a remark a while back stating “Barack Obama’s campaign had been a fairytale.” This remark can come across offensive to the African American community, but the media covered that comment also.

Deadly Tornado Hits Atlanta Area

On March 15, 2008 a deadly twister swept through Atlanta Georgia, right after it hit Alabama. The tornado broke tons of mirrors in high rise buildings, tossed cars through the streets, and destroyed Atlanta’s very own CNN building along with the Georgia Dome.
Fortunately there were no deaths reported from the disaster, however, twenty seven injuries were reported on the tornado that hit on Friday.
Saturday afternoon another wave of tornadoes hit and two deaths were reported in Georgia.
The AUC which consisted of Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, and Spelman College were off for the week due to spring break. A majority of the students were out of town on vacation. The students who were stuck on campus reported that the campuses were out of power as well as other local convenient stores around the campus. Students were left with no safety instructions in some apartment complexes. Other students had to flee to a friend’s house off campus, or had to stay in their rooms with no power until the storm was over. A spokeswoman for Georgia Power said that as of Saturday evening, about 10,000 customers were still without power in the city, along with thousands more upstate.

New Legislation Bills Affecting Atlanta

Georgia has recently added a new bill that has a major affect on their citizens. Chapter 12 of Title 16 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, “relating to offenses against public health and morals, so as to repeal the misdemeanor of tattooing near the eye unless performed by a licensed physician; to provide for an effective date; to repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes.” This is under House Bill 92 by Representative Everson of the 106th. The bill was sponsored by State Representative, Melvin Everson of Georgia.
Getting a tattoo near your eye now can be considered a misdemeanor in some cases if found guilty. The term tattoo is defined by the injection of ink by a tool that pricks, inserts, or inserting pigment of the skin. This cannot be done within one inch of the nearest eye socket.
One of the exceptions for this bill is if they tattoo is done by a licensed physician or an osteopath. It is also stated as being unlawful is a person is performing tattoos without a valid license or permit for the studio. Permits can be obtained by the county board of health or its authorized representative.

Michelle Harris a frequent visitor of tattoo shops who owns several tattoos agrees with the new bill that was passed. “I think it’s better for the safety of others who are thinking about getting tattoos. There has been many dangerous situations with those people who decide to get a tattoo on their face, that’s why their so rarely seen.”

There are also bills that are stating the requirements for one to have a proper license to give tattoos to citizens under eight teen, and policy and procedure one has to go through before giving a person a tattoo.

The Life of Apryle Harrison

Apryle sat on the computer and just finished taking her final picture of herself. “I love my camera my mother gave me, and taking pictures.” Apryle said smiling.
Apryle Nichole Harrison was born in Nassau Bay, Texas July 12, 1988 to her mother Wanda Gayle Harrison and father Michael Antonio Harrison. She has two brother’s one half brother and one sister. Apryle was born with a condition named Ontogenesis Imperfecta which is basically a brittle bone disease.” The one reason I don’t mind having this condition is because my sclera is blue”. Apryle said. Even though as a child Apryle has broken over 5 bones she has not let that stop her from enjoying life.

Apryle has been in many activities throughout her life. Every since she was younger she has always been busy. When she was 5 she joined the church choir and her elementary choir. She was co-captain of the cheerleading squad Super Mustangs at the age of six. In middle school she was a dancer, pep squad co-captain, twirler and the morning announcement person. In high school she was in the choir, a twirler, freshman duchess, homeroom ambassador, and she was the class treasurer. So through the ages of 5 and 18 Apryle has been a busy body.

At the age of 18 Apryle was accepted into the prestigious HBCU Clark Atlanta University. Clark was the only university that she applied too. “I was determined to go to Clark, and I knew I was going to get accepted.” Apryle said. Apryle loves Clark due to the fact that it’s in Atlanta, Ga. And of all the historic black events that be going on. “There is so much history within the school and it is so exciting”. Said Apryle.

As I was interviewing Apryle she got up to change the channel because Hannah Montano went off and she went across the talking of the 2008 election. Apryle then started talking about how she wants Obama to win but do not mind if Clinton wins. “The fact of an African American or a woman winning would do the world right.” Apryle said.
She also quoted, “I do not like the fact how Obama and Clinton keeps arguing when they should be on the same team.” “But in essence the 2008 election should be a one to remember”

Apryle’s goals in life are just like any other person in college. She wants to graduate with honors and go to grad school. She is not for sure what grad school she wants to go to though. She is hoping to get an intern before this summer so she can get a head start on her career in the media world.
